They release a fluid when they attach to a host which stops the host’s blood from clotting. This makes more blood for the lamprey or hagfish to consume. The fluid is released through hormones.
Hagfish’s skin release slime. The slime is used as a defense mechanism and is released through the copious slime glands.
The slime chokes the predator when the hagfish is attacked.
